چکیده

As military tactics evolve toward hyper-tempo operations, the ability to analyze vast amounts of mission relevant data is essential to command-and-control decision-making. Plan Monitoring (PM) systems provide mission status decision support to military commanders by correlating execution observables against an operational plan. The primary challenges faced by PM systems in the military domain are threefold. First, execution data is often distributed in disparate data stores connected by lowbandwidth, ad-hoc networks. Second, plans are not permanent entities but dynamic, evolving structures that are frequently modified to reflect the changing operational requirements of the commander. Third, the monitoring behavior – how the elements are to be monitored – must adapt to the needs of the commander as well as the changing tactics and entities within the operational domain. Over the past five years Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Labs (LM ATL) has developed two PM systems that meet these challenges. Our prototype PM system, Vigilant Advisor, provides operational support for Army maneuver and logistics operations, while our current effort, an Air Campaign Monitor, provides effective monitoring of continuous air campaign operations.

Adaptive Planning Concepts using Emerging Flexible Manufacturing Simulation Methods

Flexible manufacturing is a relatively new concept in manufacturing where the plant is given many different types of products in very small lot sizes to manufacture. This type of highly flexible manufacturing plant is dynamically changing at a must faster pace than traditional manufacturing plants. As such new highly adaptive planning algorithms have been studied in the attempt to utilize the f...

Improving the Resilience of Military Hospitals Through Self-Adaptation of Hospital Systems Using Organic Computing

Background and Aim: Among the failures of a disaster, the disruption of the critical infrastructure of the community causes the most damage to society. Therefore, the ability of critical infrastructure such as hospitals to anticipate, absorb, adapt or rapidly recover from a devastating event is essential. The purpose of this study is to design a self-adaptive model for resilient hospital system...

From Safety Net to Augmented Cognition: Using Flexible Autonomy Levels for On-Line Cognitive Assistance and Automation

Human factors research into spatial disorientation (SD) and loss of situation awareness (SA) in the fast jet military pilot has led to consideration of systems for monitoring pilot behaviour and psychophysiology and for detection of performance degradation and incapacitation. These could be the basis of real-time countermeasures, such as a “Safety Net” system, assisting or taking over automatic...

Intelligent delivery of military lessons learned

Lessons learned systems are a common knowledge management initiative among the American government (e.g., Department of Defense, Department of Energy, NASA). An effective lessons learned process can substantially improve decision processes, thus representing an essential chapter in a knowledge sharing digital government. Unfortunately, these systems typically fail to deliver lessons when and wh...
